![]() ![]() As most of the UK (and, alarmingly, a large swathe of the world) is experiencing temperatures we ve not seen since 1976, sit back and cool down with first-hand accounts of the era that led that slew of amazing albums in August 1978 in the UK, by the way, was mostly cool and changeable, but drier and warmer in the latter part of the month, according the Met Office s report, and Britain was heading towards its coldest winter since the infamous one of 1962/3. You might want to think of this issue of Electronic Sound as a kind of summer special, a bit like when the characters from The Beano would go on their hols, getting into all manner of scrapes involving ice cream, sandcastles and hot weather, but with edgy new wave, violence and William Burroughs. These were the conditions which led to an extraordinary series of releases a year later in the summer of 1978, four albums by four bands we celebrate in this issue: Devo, Talking Heads, Blondie and Suicide. By 1977, New York s music scene had long since junked the beads and happy-go-lucky vibes of The Lovin Spoonful and their ilk, and that summer in the city was marked by the serial killer Son of Sam, a city-wide power cut, rioting and looting, followed by a monstrous heatwave. They were a New York band and they adorned their two-and-half minute smash hit with the sounds of car horns and roadworks, the lyrics and musical delivery summoning up all the overheated tension and potential of a sweltering New York summer. The Lovin Spoonful knew what they were talking about. ![]() 1 ELECTRONIC SOUND > THE ELECTRONIC MUSIC MAGAZINE ISSUE SUMMER 1978 NEW YORK S NEW WAVE HEATWAVE DEVO SUICIDE TALKING HEADS BLONDIE MOOG SOUND LAB GABE GURNSEY MISS RED KRAFTWERK MAX RICHTER ANNA MEREDITH HOT IN THE CITYģ HELLO WELCOME TO ELECTRONIC SOUND 44 EDITOR DEPUTY EDITOR MARK ART EDITOR MARK COMMISSIONING EDITOR NEIL EDITORIAL ASSISTANT FINLAY The Lovin Spoonful released the ultimate summer in the city pop song back in July, They called it Summer In The City, which is a good title for the ultimate summer in the city pop song.
